lovemaking

lovemaking
   copulation
Originally it implied no more than courtship:
Christopher, in lovemaking, as in most things, would pursue methods unknown to her. (Somerville and Ross, 1894 — Christopher was someone who would not have read, let alone put into practice, lessons from the Kama Sutra)
Now it refers only to copulation:
    Rachman's love-making was clinical and joyless. (S. Green, 1979)
